Die casting produces metal components with exceptional dimensional accuracy, but the process often leaves behind hanging burrs: thin metal shavings or ash that cling to part surfaces after molding. Manufacturers working with castings made of aluminum, zinc, magnesium, or other metals must remove these imperfections without impacting critical tolerances. This process is broadly called deflashing, or deburring for metal parts.
Learn more about the challenges of deflashing die-cast parts, the types of die-cast deflashing media available, and common applications for plastic media deflashing.
The die-casting process often results in two kinds of burrs: moved burrs that require grinding or cutting to remove, and hanging burrs that can be cleaned off via brushing or plastic media deflashing. Hanging burrs, in particular, pose unique post-processing challenges, primarily relating to process efficiency.
Hanging burrs form when molten metal seeps into die parting lines or vents during casting. Unlike moved burrs that require heavy grinding, hanging burrs are fragile projections. Manual brushing might dislodge them, but the process is slow and lacks consistency for complex geometries.
Deburring die-cast parts with plastic media accelerates this production stage. Pressurized thermoplastic pellets impact part surfaces at controlled velocities, removing burrs at their attachment points without abrading the base metal. The process can reach recessed areas that hand tools often miss, such as internal cavities in automotive housings and intricate cooling passages in aerospace components.
Aluminum die-cast deflashing/deburring requires softer plastic media formulations. By contrast, zinc and magnesium alloys are harder and more brittle, so they can tolerate slightly harder pellets that remove flash without damaging the surface finish. Selecting the proper media hardness prevents over-blasting or altering dimensions beyond acceptable tolerance ranges.
At Maxi-Blast, we manufacture several thermoplastic grades for die-cast deflashing media applications:
Each plastic media for die-cast parts is available in multiple grit sizes. Coarser grits remove heavy burrs quickly, while finer grits work for smaller burrs.
Applications for die-cast deflashing media span many industries, such as:
